In its efforts to develop a new antidepressant, a German drugmaker has stumbled upon a substance that increases female arousal.
German drugmaker Boehringer Ingelheim didn’t set out to create a Viagra-like drug for women. The company was simply trying to develop a fast-acting antidepressant, one that patients would respond to in a matter of days, not weeks as in most current treatments. By the late 1990s the company had developed a molecule called flibanserin that seemed to relieve stress in rats. But like many promising drugs, it flopped in human trials. Says Dr. Lutz Hilbrich, the company’s executive director of general medicine: “We did not see the effect we were expecting.”

According to a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, the erectile-dysfunction drug sildenafil (marketed as Viagra®) can improve sexual function in pre-menopausal women experiencing adverse sexual side effects from anti-depressants.
Investigators from the University of New Mexico School of Medicine conducted a small, 8-week trial to evaluate the efficacy of sildenafil in treating sexual dysfunction in women who were taking anti-depressant medications. A total of 98 women aged 18 to 50 were randomized to receive either sildenafil or a placebo pill prior to attempting to initiate sexual activity. The investigators found that women taking sildenafil were more likely to experience sexual satisfaction than those taking placebo.

Problem: Antidepressants like Prozac and Paxil, which work by controlling the availability of the brain chemical serotonin, are the most widely prescribed medications for adults in the United States, accounting for 160 million prescriptions a year. They’re hugely important, but about 70 percent of women who take these medications suffer sexual dysfunction as a side effect. This disruption of good sexual function is so distressing that it is a common reason for patients to stop treatment, which often results in a worsening of depressive symptoms and a poorer level of function.

It really does take more to get women in mood, drug makers find out. That’s why the search for a women’s version of the sex pill is proving tricky.
Ten years ago this month, the Food and Drug Administration approved Viagra. And about five minutes after word of Pfizer’s magical med went global, the question first was asked: Where is the women’s version of Viagra?
Give us another five years, maybe less, say the most optimistic researchers and doctors. Though it’s unclear exactly how many women would ask for a prescription, no one doubts that the first company that gets to market a remedy for female sexual dysfunction (FSD), as it’s formally known, will earn a fortune.

ERECTION drug Viagra has been given the thumbs down by women who say the sex and romance is better on longer-lasting anti-impotence medication.
New Zealand researchers road-tested two of the biggest-selling drugs on 100 couples affected by erectile dysfunction.
They found women preferred Cialis, which can help men achieve erections during arousal for 36 hours, over Viagra, which works for about four hours.
Previous studies have found men with erection problems also prefer the longer-lasting preparations, but this is the first study to gather women’s views on the drugs’ performance.
